It’s a bit of a surprise to see the market having a tough time separating these two teams.

Spain was very impressive in its group play and while it had a much easier draw than the French side, it’s tough to ignore a 3-0 record.

The Spaniards posted wins over South Korea (73-69), Serbia (85-70) and Canada (76-66) to sweep Group A. Expected to lead the Spaniards in this duel is WNBA veteran Astou Ndour, who averaged team-highs 22.7 points, 10 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in the group stage. She will get support from Alba Torrens and Cristina Ouvina.

France, meanwhile, booked the last quarterfinal ticket by emerging as one of two best-ranked third placers across all groups. They opened their campaign in Group B with a 74-70 loss to host Japan before bouncing back with an 87-62 rout of Nigeria. The French lost to the United States 93-82 in their final group assignment.

France boast of Sandrine Gruda, Endene Miyem, Gabby Williams and Marine Johannes.

These sides are very familiar with one another having played four times already this year and Spain should be better for the lessons they were able to take away, especially from the two warm up games in July.

The winner of this game will play either Belgium or host Japan in the semifinals.

Verdict

I’ll back Spain to get over the line by at least five points as the French stumble after a draining group stage.
