The soaring Seagulls host Pep Guardiola’s champions in Saturday’s Premier League tea-time clash at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton were held to a goalless draw at bottom club Norwich last weekend while City maintained their bid to retain the title with a 2-0 home win over Burnley.
Fourth-placed Brighton are ahead of Tottenham, Manchester United, West Ham and Everton in the table.
Last season’s struggles were a result of Brighton’s failure to finish. Graham Potter’s side played some flowing football and created plenty of chances but they lacked goals.
This season, French striker Neal Maupay has been more consistent and has scored four goals in eight games, including a crucial late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.
That draw was the first of three in Brighton’s last three games, with the last two ending 0-0. Since being promoted in 2017, Brighton have had more draws (53) and more goalless draws (19) than any other side in the competition.
This is a tough run of games for the Seagulls, who faced Arsenal last week and will tackle Liverpool next weekend.
City have conceded just three goals in their nine Premier League games (W6 D2 L1), keeping seven clean sheets in that run, since last facing Brighton.
Guardiola’s side come into this having lost just once this term, on the opening weekend at Tottenham. They followed up their victory over Burnley with a 5-1 annihilation of Club Brugge in the Champions League last Tuesday with Riyad Mahrez leading the charge with two goals.
Having lost their first seven Premier League games against Manchester City by an aggregate score of 21-2, Brighton came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in their last such meeting in May.
