England maintained their charge towards qualification for next year’s FIFA World Cup with a crushing victory on Saturday, but they are expected to face a stiffer challenge at home to Hungary.
Gareth Southgate kept his powder dry by making 10 changes for the 5-0 win at Andorra, leaving the likes of Harry Kane, Mason Mount, Declan Rice, Jordan Pickford, Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker on the bench but they are all expected to return for Tuesday’s game at Wembley. Ben Chilwell, Bukayo Saka, Tammy Abraham, James Ward-Prowse and Jack Grealish all scored against the Andorrans as England tightened their grip on the Group I top spot with 19 points from seven matches.
The Three Lions are favoured to repeat last month’s comfortable win against the Magyars, who lost 1-0 to Albania on Saturday night in an empty stadium.
England overcame a hostile atmosphere in Budapest with a devastating second-half performance in a 4-0 win just over five weeks ago. Southgate’s side were held at the break but let rip in the second half with four unanswered goals from Raheem Sterling, Kane, Harry Maguire and Rice.
Hungary’s hopes of making it into the play-offs are virtually over after a superb individual goal from Chelsea striker Armando Broja secured a 1-0 win for Albania who are five points clear of England’s opponents in second place.
Head coach Marco Rossi was forced to pick a strong starting XI with qualification in the balance, so England have the advantage of their senior players being completely rested before Tuesday’s match.
Southgate deployed a 4-3-3 formation against Andorra, but went with his preferred 4-2-3-1 in Hungary, although he will be without Kalvin Phillips and Harry Maguire from that game, so Jordan Henderson and Tyrone Mings are likely to return.
Chilwell, who scored the opening goal against Andorra after a lengthy VAR check for offside, could start at left-back again with doubts surrounding Luke Shaw.
Hungary defender Endre Botka is suspended so Adam Lang could start in the absence of the injured Attila Fiola in a possible 3-4-2-1 system in which Daniel Salloi is expected to be replaced in attack by Szabolcs Schon.
