The traditional Premier League curtain-raiser takes place on Saturday when Manchester City face Leicester in the Community Shield at Wembley.
Pep Guardiola’s side, 4/6 to retain their Premier League crown, are 17/20 to win inside 90 minutes having been linked with big-money moves for Jack Grealish and Harry Kane, but remarkably could be light on numbers this weekend.
The Foxes have made some astute signings and are 7/2 for a top-four finish, but let’s look at some of the markets and odds in our Leicester v Man City betting tips.
Leicester qualified for the Community Shield courtesy of their stunning 1-0 win against Chelsea in the FA Cup final and are 5/2 to spring a surprise against the Premier League champions.
Brendan Rodgers’ side famously thrashed City 5-2 at the Etihad at the start of last season, but lost the return 2-0 at the King Power.
The champions would have been struggling to field a team of senior players but the returns of Kevin de Bruyne, Rodri and Bernardo Silva mean Guardiola should be able to select a reasonably strong side as he did in Wednesday’s 4-1 pre-season friendly victory against Blackpool.
Ilkay Gundogan scored twice and teenager Sam Edozie bagged his third goal in as many games, so Guardiola could mix experience and youth on Saturday.
Leicester counterpart Rodgers has added midfielder Boubakary Soumare from Ligue 1 champions Lille, Zambia striker Patson Daka and left-back Ryan Bertrand to his squad which can be backed at 19/4 to win and concede this weekend.
The last three meetings between the clubs have been level at the break and that outcome is available at 23/20 for Saturday’s Leicester v Man City betting tips.
Manchester City kept the highest number of clean sheets last season and are 27/10 to win to nil, while a win and both teams to score is 23/10.
Leicester winger Harvey Barnes played the first half of Saturday’s 3-3 draw with QPR having missed the last three months of the season with a knee injury which required two operations.
The Foxes lined up in a 4-3-3 formation in west London where Youri Tielemans got his first start of the season like Barnes, who started in attack with Daka and Ayoze Perez.
Fernandinho, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Riyad Mahrez all featured against the Seasiders, so should be in the frame for the Community Shield.
Mahrez is a likely starter and the 9/2 co-favourite with Leicester strikers Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho to grab the game’s opening goal, while Manchester City youngster Edozie is 11/4 to get on the scoresheet.
Gundogan’s double against Blackpool means he is 5/1 to break the deadlock or 15/8 to find the net, the same price as Daka for the Foxes.
Tielemans is 12/1 to repeat his Wembley heroics or 4/1 to score any time.
