Manchester United and Liverpool renew their rivalry in the English Premier League on Sunday.
Both teams registered wins in the Champions League in midweek. United bounced back from their defeat at Leicester by producing a comeback 3-2 win over Atalanta on Wednesday while Liverpool followed up their 5-0 thumping of Watford at Vicarage Road by beating Atletico Madrid 3-2 in Spain.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly under pressure following a poor run of form.
A 4-2 loss at Leicester last weekend ended their 29-game unbeaten away run and left them sixth in the table, five points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea and four behind Liverpool.
United spent heavily in the summer, investing over £100 million on Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo in the hope they could build upon last season’s second-placed finish.
Yet they have lost to West Ham at home in the League Cup and Aston Villa in the Premier League in recent weeks, with just two wins coming in their last six games in all competitions.
The Red Devils have only picked up eight points from their last seven home Premier League matches.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in 18 league games, the longest current run in the top four tiers of English football. They sit second, a point off the top, following their demolition of Watford.
Away from home, the Reds have scored at least three goals in each of their last five Premier League games (17 in total), with only Manchester United last season having a longer such run (six).
They also maintained their 100% record in Champions League Group B by beating Atletico 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Following their 4-2 win at Manchester United in May, Liverpool are looking to secure consecutive league victories at Old Trafford for the first time since January 2002.
United have won just one of their last 10 Premier League meetings with Klopp’s side and with Tottenham and Manchester City upcoming on their schedule in the next couple of weeks, Solskjaer must hope his team will come together and find their league form quickly.
