Newcastle welcome West Ham to St. James’ Park for their opening Premier League fixture on Sunday.
The Magpies have gotten a solid pre-season under their belts to prepare them for this game. Out of their five pre-season matches, they won three, drew one and lost just one.
Their opponents West Ham had an even more prosperous pre-season. The Hammers played seven friendlies, winning five and drawing two, leaving them unbeaten heading into this season opener.
Newcastle’s final warm up game was against newly-promoted Norwich City in a match that really was a game of two halves.
After an uneventful first half which ended goalless, all of the action was being saved for the second half. Matt Ritchie sent Newcastle on their way with the opening goal of the game.
A flurry of substitutions followed which saw the introduction of Dwight Gayle. The 30 year old striker hit the ground running and scored two goals to seal a 3-0 win for the Magpies.
West Ham took on Italian side Atalanta in their final warm up. Michail opened the scoring in the first half to hand the Hammers a 1-0 lead at the break.
The game ebbed and flowed with lots of substitutions made by both teams. Pablo Fornals took the game beyond all doubt with an 89th minute goal to secure a 2-0 win for West Ham.
Both teams have had very good preparations, but now it’s crunch time and getting points on the board early will be important.

Newcastle vs West Ham Predictions
The opening games of a league season are often unpredictable. Teams go through transitions, mainly involving managers and players, and it can take time for them to get going.
The only thing we can use to indicate how they may start the season is their pre-season form. On that front, you could say Newcastle are in pretty good form.
Most of their wins came against lower league teams, but it was their 3-0 win over Norwich that impressed most. The vast substitutes that were made would indicate Steve Bruce is happy with his squad.
That could also explain why the Magpies are yet to make any signings this summer transfer window. It looks likely that Bruce will proceed with the squad he currently has at his disposal.
West Ham haven’t made any major moves in the transfer market themselves. That said, this is the team that finished 6th in the Premier League last season, so clearly David Moyes is happy with his squad.
The Hammers went through their entire pre-season campaign unbeaten, and that’s sure to give them some confidence.
Their 6-2 win over Celtic was a result that really stood out over that period. A Michail Antonio brace was added to by a Mark Noble penalty to leave West Ham 3-1 up at the break.
Ryan Christie pulled one back to Celtic, before Said Benrahma extended West Ham’s lead just minutes later.
Jarrod Bowen and Armstrong Akoflex completed the rout for the Premier League side. The latter was signed by West Ham from Celtic recently.
Both teams will come into this with confidence. Newcastle will be happy fans are back in the stadium, will that make a difference?
Newcastle vs West Ham Head to Head
Despite West Ham’s excellent campaign last season, Newcastle actually hold the edge over the Hammers on the head to heads.
In the four times that the two clubs have met in the last two seasons, Newcastle have won three of them. The other game was a draw, leaving West Ham winless during that time.
The first of those games came in November 2019. Goals from Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez and Jonjo Shelvey gave the Magpies a 3-0 lead.
West Ham came with a late surge, with goals from Fabian Balbuena and Robert Snodgrass reducing the deficit. It wasn’t enough though, and Newcastle held on to win 3-2.
The reverse fixture that season saw the two clubs play out a thrilling 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park. Steve Bruce’s men then did the double over West Ham last season.
The first meeting was also the opening fixture of the season last year, with Newcastle winning 2-0 at the London Stadium. Another eventful game followed in April, which saw Newcastle again win 3-2.
Newcastle Team News
First choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka remains out injured. Frederick Woodman played the majority of pre-season for the Magpies in his place and looks set to start in net here.
Emil Krafth and Ciaran Clark could start in defence ahead of Woodman. Isaac Hayden also looks set to start in the back line for the home side.
Sean Longstaff, Matt Ritchie and Miguel Almiron could all feature in the midfield. The trio look set to start in front of a back five that Bruce looks to prefer in the Premier League.
It will be interesting to see what he decides for the forward line here. Joelinton looks to be a shoe-in for a starting berth, but the question remains, who will partner him?
Callum Wilson netted 12 goals for Newcastle last season and looks the most likely to start in this. Dwight Gayle has had a good pre-season though and has surely thrown his hat into the ring.
West Ham Team News
Our Newcastle v West Ham predictions expect Lukasz Fabianski to start the game in goal for West Ham here. The Polish shot stopper has been the Hammers’ number one for three years now.
After spending last season on loan from Watford, defender Craig Dawson was signed permanently this summer. The 31 year old looks set to start alongside Issa Diop in defence, with the absence of Angelo Ogbonna through injury.
Vladimir Coufal and Aaron Creswell are likely to start in the fullback positions for the visitors here. Those two could be prominent in the attacking half for West Ham.
England international Declan Rice will start in holding midfield for the Hammers. Michail Antonio looks likely to lead the forward line.
Arthur Masuaku and Manuel Lanzini look set to miss this opening fixture through injury.
Newcastle vs West Ham Betting Tips
The home side are currently priced up at 11/5 to win the game in our Newcastle v West Ham match bets.
The draw can be backed at 5/2. Although only one of the last 14 clashes between these two clubs has ended all square.
West Ham will be looking to continue their good pre-season form into the domestic campaign. Moyes’ men are priced up as 6/5 favourites to win this.
The visitors definitely have the better quality of players here and are more than capable of winning the game. Newcastle’s record against the Hammers is difficult to ignore though. Despite that, we’re backing West Ham to get the three points at St. James’.
