Championship side Preston host Premier League giants Liverpool in the EFL Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday.
Preston face a difficult task, with the high-flying Reds still fighting on four fronts domestically and in Europe.
North End have beaten Mansfield (3-0 away), Morecambe (4-2 away) and Cheltenham (4-1 at home) to reach the last 16 and their reward is a glamour tie against the six-time European champions.
But they have not started the Championship season well and have won just three of their opening 14 games to sit in 19th place, their latest fixture ending in a 2-0 defeat at in-form Blackpool on Saturday.
Preston are bidding to reach the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
Frankie McAvoy’s side have drawn six of their Championship games, however, and have been tough to beat.
Midfielder Alistair McCann is doubtful while strikers Conor Wickham and Ched Evans, defender Matthew Olosunde and midfielder Isaiah Brown have all been ruled out. Midfielder Alan Browne is suspended while defender Sepp van den Berg cannot face his parent club.
Liverpool are aiming to lift the League Cup for a fifth consecutive season and surpass the Reds’ tally of wins in the competition.
The Reds defeated Norwich 3-0 at Carrow Road to reach the last 16.
Jurgen Klopp saw his Liverpool side demolish 5-0 at Manchester United on Sunday to leave them second in the Premier League table, a point behind Chelsea. Mohamed Salah led the Reds in that game by registering a hat-trick.
Midfielders James Milner, Fabiniho, Naby Keita, Thiago Alcântara and Harvey Elliott are injured while goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is doubtful.
The Reds have progressed from 16 of their last 17 League Cup ties against sides from a lower division, with the exception being a shootout defeat to Northampton in 2010-11.
This is the first meeting between Preston and Liverpool since January 2009, with the Reds winning 2-0 at Deepdale in an FA Cup tie. This is their first meeting in the League Cup.
They have faced each other in three previous domestic cup ties, with Preston winning 1-0 in a second replay in the 1961-62 FA Cup after both previous games ended goalless.
While Liverpool have won their last two meetings, Preston have lost just three of their last 15 encounters (W6 D6).
