Tom Brady goes back to New England to take on Bill Belichick and the Patriots on Sunday night in the game of the week.

Brady, who quarterbacked the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, won a seventh last season with his new team, Tampa Bay, and his departure has many wondering if the coach made the QB or was it really the other way around?

Belichick’s Patriots are 8-11 since the club moved on from Brady following the 2019 season. They have lost both of their home games this term – against a poor Miami Dolphins squad and to the decent New Orleans Saints in Week 3.

They are 1-2 after beating the winless Jets in New York two weeks ago and while Belichick has turned 1-2 seasons into Super Bowl parades, he has Brady on his side of the field, not on the opposite side. The Patriots set the gold standard for so long, that it is almost jarring how ordinary they have become.

Their offensive line never gave the new helmsman Mac Jones little time to throw against the Saints and he tossed the first three interceptions of his rookie career.

The Patriots, who are 3.25 to win, have not yet faced a dynamic offense this season. Jones can be hidden behind a running game and playing with a lead, but he has not yet proved he can make explosive plays coming from behind. There could be more rookie lumps to come.

Throw in the fact that Brady is still salty about the way Belichick wanted him out the door, that he is coming off a road loss to the Rams, that he needs just 68 passing yards to overtake Drew Brees and the NFL’s all-time leading passer, and it is easy to see why the Buccaneers are 1.36 favourites.

Would it surprise anyone if Brady were to score with a rare touchdown run?

The Bucs have lost three of their four previous visits to New England and have lost their last four to the Patriots, who are 7-2 all-time against the Floridians.

The Bucs are 2.05 to successfully overcome a 7.0-point handicap and are also 2.05 to score 28 points or more.

Verdict

We are backing Tom Brady and the Buccaneers to cover the spread against the Patriots.
