It is surprising that Brisbane are not favoured in this one. Newcastle are finals bound but it is hard to argue that they deserve road favouritism.
The Knights have no points in them, ranking 15th in scoring. Even with Pearce and Ponga in the side, Newcastle have struggled to accumulate, covering just two of their last seven,
Brisbane are obviously a struggling team but they had gone on a good cover run before shooting themselves in the foot against Cronulla last week. They lost that by only eight.
The Knights have some big outs this week. Mitch Barnett has been arguably Newcastle’s best player but is being rested along with Jayden Brailey, Jacob Saifiti and Hymel Hunt. For a team that lacks depth, that is a fair list of outs, even if David Klemmer is back from suspension.
Brisbane have lost Thomas Flegler and one-gamer Brendan Piakura but Flegler is a hot-head who won’t be missed. Jordan Riki is an underrated return.
The Broncos are in a very good spot here. They have covered 12 of 18 at Suncorp and 10 of 15 as an underdog at the ground. They have covered five of their last six overall when an outsider.
Newcastle, by contrast, are in a horrid spot. They have covered just five of 20 on the road and just one of six when a favourite of more than four. They cover at just 38% off a win.
