While the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles lost 28-18 to the Storm in Round 21, it’s the sort of result that has cemented them as premiership smokies.
The Parramatta Eels, on the other hand, are plummeting in the premiership winner market (now $41) following their 40-12 loss to the Rabbitohs. That makes it three losses on the bounce for Brad Arthur’s men.
Taniela Paseka is out with an injury while Toafofoa Sipley has taken a one-week ban. Josh Aloiai will start with Curtis Sironen coming onto the Sea Eagles bench. With Reed Mahoney out for the season, Joey Lussick is being given a crack at hooker for the Eels. Michael Oldfield takes Haze Dunster’s place on the wing. Meanwhile, Makahesi Makatoa will make his NRL debut off the bench.
The wheels have fallen off the Eels. Their one-dimensional attack has been exposed and a lack of plan B when going wide doesn’t work has seen them become easy to defend. With the points not flowing, their defence has taken a hit to concede 68 points over the last fortnight.
Now, they play a Sea Eagles side that, while somewhat one-dimensional in their reliance on Tom Trbojevic, can kill you in a variety of ways. The Storm did everything they could to shut down Trobojevic last week. It’s one of the quieter games he has produced all season and he still laid on two tries for teammates.
The Eels don’t have that same variation in attack, nor do they have the edge defence to shut Trbojevic down. Almost 50% of the tries Parramatta has conceded this season have come down their right edge. Notably, that number has increased since Waqa Blake shifted to the left. Expect the Sea Eagles to look left early and often on Saturday night.
