The St. George-Illawarra Dragons produced a handful of nice moments last week but were ultimately convincingly beaten 40-22 by the Roosters.
The North Queensland Cowboys, on the other hand, haven’t produced many nice moments at all over the last two months. Their 32-16 loss to the Eels is another addition to the list of disappointing performances this year.
Another week and more changes for the Dragons but only two new faces to the 17: Tyrell Sloan replaces Matt Dufty and Freddy Lussick joins the bench. Jason Taumalolo, Kyle Feldt and Murray Taulagi all return for the Cowboys with Val Holmes moving into the centres.
What a lottery this is…The Dragons have finally been exposed after treading water for much of the NRL season while the Cowboys are arguably the worst team in the competition on form at the moment. They’ve both had a handful of good moments this year but not many of note in recent weeks.
Zac Lomax poses as a key weapon for the Dragons and will be licking his lips at the prospect of targeting Scott Drinkwater in defence. Lomax’s defensive prowess will go a long way to shutting down the Cowboys’ favoured left edge in attack too. Where the Cowboys can pull things back is through the middle. They have the sort of pack that can stomp all over the Dragons and at least drag them into attacking field positions.
Whether or not Drinkwater and Tom Dearden can turn that field position into points is their issue. In a game with so much uncertainty around it, all we can be confident in is Lomax flicking a pass out to his winger.
