World No.1 Ashleigh Barty begins her bid for a second straight Grand Slam title against Russian veteran Vera Zvonreva.

Taking a short hiatus after winning Wimbledon, Barty blasted away any fears that she may be underdone coming into the US Open. The 25-year-old continued a sensational 2021 campaign by winning the Cincinnati Masters just over a week ago.

Barty did not drop a set, leaving the likes of former world No.1s Victoria Azarenka and Angelique Kerber, and French Open champ Barbora Krejcikova in her wake.

The 36-year-old’s Grand Slam career spans 20 seasons. A former world No.2, Zvonreva was the beaten Wimbledon and US Open finalist in 2010. But she has appeared in the main draw of just nine majors since missing the 2012 US Open.

Zvonreva, currently ranked 101st, won her first Slam match in almost three years by defeating Marie Bouzkova at Wimbledon. She lost to hotshot Iga Swiatek in the second round. Zvonreva went down to Ludmilla Samsonova in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters, before pulling out of her second-round match at the Cleveland Championships.

Barty has won her last 13 first-round Grand Slam matches. An Australian Open semi-finalist and a champion at the French Open and Wimbledon, she is out to improve her US Open best of reaching the fourth round (2018 and ’19).

Verdict

Zvonreva has a win over Petra Kvitova to her name this year. But the 2021 version of Barty is a different proposition altogether. The tournament favourite has taken her time to get out of second gear at recent majors, but expect her to get the job done here without too many hiccups.
