Jordan Thompson faces a tricky second round match at the US Open against 21st seed Aslan Karatsev.
The Russian is in poor form and that gives the Aussie a big chance, although this one may go the distance. Karatsev’s most recent Grand Slam appearance saw him go out in the first round of Wimbledon, losing in straight sets to Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
In his most recent US Open warm-up event at the Cincinnati Masters, Karatsev suffered a disappointing first round defeat to Marin Cilic.
Karatsev had an entertaining four-set battle (7-5 1-6 6-3 6-2) with Spain’s Jaume Munar to reach the second round in New York.
Thompson had a good run to the third round of Wimbledon but was on the wrong end of a straight sets defeat to Ilya Ivashka.
Thompson met fellow Aussie – and candidate for surprise package of the year – Max Purcell at the Winston Salem Open last week, but was knocked out 7-5 6-4.
Gianluca Mager provided a difficult test for Thompson in the US Open first round but the 27-year-old Sydney native eventually came through in five sets 4-6 6-3 7-5 2-6 7-6(3).
The lack of previous encounters makes this a tough one to call, but Thompson’s fourth round appearance here last year – allied to Karatsev’s poor recent form – should see the Aussie come out on top. It could well go the distance though.
