In something of an anomaly for recent women’s Grand Slams, 13 of the top 17 seeds made it through to the US Open’s fourth round.
But for one of seventh seed Iga Swiatek and 11th seed Belinda Bencic, the Flushing Meadows campaign will end in the Round of 16.
Bencic arrived in New York with a stack of momentum behind her. After winning the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, she reached the Cincinnati Masters quarter-finals in impressive style.
The 24-year-old Swiss has only gathered steam at the US Open, powering past Aranxta Rus (6-4 6-4), Martina Trevisan (6-3 6-1) and 23rd seed Jessica Pegula (6-2 6-4) in straight sets.
Bencic’s two best Grand Slam results came at the US Open. She reached the quarter-finals on debut in 2014 and the semis in 2019, her most recent appearance. This is only her sixth fourth-round match in 25 career majors.
Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champ, has tread a more difficult path to the last 16. The 20-year-old beat Jamie Loeb in straight sets in the first round, but had to fight from a set down to eliminate Fiona Ferro in the second and endured another three-set battle against Anett Kontaveit in the third round.
The Polish tyro is featuring in just her 11th major. She is 2-4 in Grand Slam fourth-round matches, making it to the quarters in her French Open title defence earlier this year. Eliminated in the second round at the Olympics and the first round of the Cincinnati Masters, Swiatek is still searching for her best form.
The pair met for the first time earlier this year in the Adelaide International final. Swiatek wiped the court with her rival 6-2 6-2, winning 91 percent of her first-serve points while Bencic committed eight double-faults.
Swiatek’s serve has been less destructive than usual lately, however, while Bencic has been strong in that department so far. Strap in for an absorbing duel between two of the WTA Tour’s strongest hitters. Both boast imposing groundstrokes and outstanding all-court games – but I have to go with form in this blockbuster.
