Dutch bolter Botic van de Zandshulp has rolled two of the top 11 seeds on his way to an unlikely US Open quarter-final appearance.
Can he pull off another boilover victory as the $16.70 underdog against second seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia?
Van de Zandshulp is ranked 117th in the world and only made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in January. He made a minor splash by upsetting Herbert Hurkacz in the first round of the French Open and also reached the second round at Wimbledon.
But the 25-year-old ITF Futures and Challenger tournament journeyman has enjoyed a dream run in New York.
After progressing through the US Open qualifiers, he came from two sets down to beat Carlos Taberner in the first round. Eighth seed Casper Ruud became his first high-profile victim in the second round, winning in four after dropping the first set.
Van de Zandschulp then defeated Facundo Bagnis in four sets and outlasted 11th seed Diego Schwartzman in a five-setter. Showing outstanding resolve to win the deciding set 6-1 after watching a two-set lead evaporate, van de Zandshulp won the ace count against Schwartzman 15-1.
Medvedev, meanwhile, has left a trail of comprehensively beaten opponents in his wake at Flushing Meadows.
The 25-year-old – the $3 second-favourite for the title behind Novak Djokovic – is yet to drop a set. He has eliminated Richard Gasquet, Dominik Koepfer, Pablo Andujar and 24th seed Dan Evans on his way to his fifth Grand Slam quarter-final.
Medvedev was the beaten US Open finalist in 2019 and reached the semis last year. He also made it to the Australian Open final this year.
Warming up for this assault by winning the Canadian Open and reaching the Cincinnati Masters semis, Medvedev has racked up 45 aces and lost just three games on serve so far. Each victory has come by a games margin of eight-plus.
Van de Zandshulp’s big serve and court coverage should provide Medvedev with his stiffest test to date. It’s hard seeing the Russian being dragged into deep waters or even dropping a set. But the underdog shapes as good value with a massive head-start.
