Gael Monfils is a dangerous opponent who will get the New York crowd behind him at the US Open.
The 17th-seeded Frenchman, who reached the semi-finals of the 2016 edition of this Grand Slam tournament, has been struggling for consistency in 2021. He has failed to win three consecutive matches on the ATP Tour since February 2020.
The 34-year-old lost in the first round at the Olympics before a quarter-final appearance at the Canada Masters. He lost 7-6 7-6 against Andrey Rublev in the Cincinnati Masters third round.
Monfils has had a favourable draw at the US Open and reached the third round with little difficulty. He beat Federico Coria 6-3 6-2 6-2 followed by a 7-5 4-6 6-4 6-4 win against Steve Johnson in the second round.
Jannik Sinner is playing below his best with value on Monfils winning to reach the fourth round. The 13th-ranked Italian broke into the top 50 in September 2020 and has continued climbing the rankings.
They 20-year-old won the Great Ocean Road Open in January and reached the Miami Masters final in March. His best result on clay came in a semi-final appearance in Barcelona. The Italian failed on grass but bounced back on hard courts by winning the title in Washington.
Sinner lost two of three matches before the US Open. He reached the third round after a 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2 win against Max Purcell and 6-3 7-6 6-7 6-4 win against World No.716 Zachary Svajda.
