Matteo Berrettini beat Ilya Ivashka easily at Wimbledon last July but this could be a closer affair.
The No. 6-ranked Italian is likely to triumph in their third-round duel in the US Open but might do it tougher than many expect.
Ivashka is in career best form. He did little of note in 2021, reaching the semi-finals in Munich after beating Alexander Zverev and the Eastbourne quarter-finals on grass in June.
The Belarusian has benefitted from the switch to hard courts. The 27-year-old reached the third round at the Tokyo Olympics and Washington Open before failing to qualify in Cincinnati.
Ivashka put that behind him at the Winston-Salem Open where he won his first title on the ATP Tour. He beat Andreas Seppi, Marin Cilic, Jan Lennard Struff, Pablo Carreno Busta, Emil Ruusuvuori and Mikael Ymer on his way to the title.
Ivashka carried that form into the US Open. He beat Tennys Sandgren 7-6 6-3 6-4 in the first round before a 6-3 6-4 7-6 win against Vasek Pospisil.
Berrettini has won 27 of his last 32 matches and won his last 14 matches against players outside the Top 50.
The 25-year-old won titles in Belgrade and Queen's Club in 2021 alongside final appearances at the Madrid Masters and Wimbledon.
The Italian withdrew from the Olympics due to a thigh injury he sustained at Wimbledon, returning to action in Cincinnati where he lost to Felix Auger Aliassime in the second round.
Berrettini beat Jeremy Chardy 7-6 7-6 6-3 in the first round of the US Open and ousted Corentin Moutet 7-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 in the second round.
Berrettini is 2-0 against Ilya Ivashka, the latest coming in a 6-4 6-3 6-1 win in the 2021 Wimbledon fourth round.
Matteo Berrettini beat Ilya Ivashka in straight sets at Wimbledon but the Belarusian has been on fire in recent weeks. I am approaching this match with caution and backing Berrettini to win in 4 sets.
