Kevin Anderson is 2-1 against No. 11 seed Diego Schwartzman and hit 49 aces in his first round win at the US Open.
The South African can keep this closer than the odds suggest and produce an upset win in New York.
Anderson didn’t play much tennis in 2021 until the grass court swing came around.
The South African surprised many when he won the title in Newport in July, beating Alexander Bublik in the semi-finals and Jenson Brooksby in the final. Anderson lost in the first round in three straight tournaments on hard courts.
The former World No. 5 changed that by beating Jiri Vesely in the US Open first round. He hit 49 aces and won 86% of his 1st serves in the 7-6 4-6 3-6 7-6 7-6 win.
Schwartzman, meanwhile, won in Buenos Aires in March. He struggled in Europe, however, with his best results coming in quarter-final appearances in Barcelona and the French Open.
The Argentine switched to hard courts and failed to get past the third round at the Tokyo Olympics, Canada Masters and Cincinnati Masters.
Schwartzman beat Ricardas Berankis 7-5 6-3 6-3 in the first round at the US Open. He won 42% of his 2nd serves and hit 3 aces.
Anderson is 2-1 against Schwartzman in their head-to-head duels. Anderson won 7-6 7-5 5-7 6-4 at the 2015 Australian Open with Schwartzman winning 1-6 2-6 7-5 7-6 6-2 at the 2018 French Open.
