World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has won his last 16 matches against Kei Nishikori including a 6-2 6-0 win at the recent Tokyo Olympics.
This should be another routine win for the Serbian, who is aiming to win his fourth US Open title. Djokovic started 2021 by winning his ninth Australian Open title. He reached the Rome Masters final, won in Belgrade, won the French Open and then won Wimbledon.
The Serbian finished fourth at the Olympics, losing to eventual gold medalist Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals and Pablo Carreno-Busta in the battle for the bronze.
Djokovic beat Holger Rune 6-1 6-7 6-2 6-1 in the first round at the US Open. He did it easier in the second round, beating Tallon Griekspoor 6-2 6-3 6-2.
Nishikori failed to reach the semi-finals in his first 12 tournaments in 2021.
The 31-year-old finally reached the semis in Washington, beating Alexander Bublik, Cameron Norrie and Lloyd Harris before going down to Mackenzie Mcdonald.
The former World No.4 from Japan withdrew from the Canada Masters to be ready for the US Open.
Nishikori beat Salvatore Caruso 6-1 6-1 5-7 6-3 in the first round before a tough 7-6 6-3 6-7 2-6 6-3 win against Mackenzie Mcdonald in his next match.
Djokovic has a 17-2 advantage against Nishikori in their head-to-head duels, including 16 straight wins. The Japanese hasn’t beaten Djokovic since the semi-final of the 2014 US Open.
