Seeded 14th at the US Open, Australian dynamo Alex de Minaur confronts a tricky first-up assignment against world No.42 Taylor Fritz.

But the 22-year-old from Sydney can take a firm psychological edge into this showdown.

De Minaur is 4-0 against Fritz. The duo’s history includes a 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals clash, the 2019 Atlanta Open final and an encounter at the 2019 Basel Open – with de Minaur winning all three in straight sets.

Form-wise, however, he has some ground to make up. De Minaur won the Eastbourne International in June but it’s been a lean run since. He suffered first-round exits at Wimbledon (to Sebastian Korda), the Washington Open (Steve Johnson) and the Canadian Open (to Nikoloz Basilashvili). After coming from a set down to beat Filip Krajinovic at the Cincinnati Masters, de Minaur lost to Gael Monfils in straights sets in the second round.

Fritz has found himself in a similar funk after a fruitful few weeks. He reached the third round at Wimbledon for the first time, and made it to the semis of the Los Cabos Open and the Atlanta Open. But he was bounced out in the first round in Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati by lower-ranked players.

De Minaur is 10-6 in first-round Grand Slam matches. His two best major performances came at the last two US Opens: a fourth-round appearance in 2019 and a quarter-final run last year.

Fritz is 13-7 in the opening round of majors, but has won 10 of his last 11. The 23-year-old has reached the third round of a Slam seven times – including the 2018 and ’20 US Opens. But he has not been beyond the Round of 32.

It shapes as a fascinating duel between two young, tenacious and nicely-matched players. The better-credentialed de Minaur’s head-to-head advantage is enough reason to back against the Californian.
