Portsmouth FC vs Birmingham City Match Preview and Tips
Kenny Jackett's Portsmouth will play host to Birmingham City in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Both teams experienced very different fortunes on the opening day, with Pompey going down 1-0 away at Shrewsbury Town, and Birmingham picking up a shock victory away at Brentford.
Portsmouth Form & Team News
Portsmouth will arrive to Tuesday's game coming out of an opening day 1-0 defeat at the hands of Shrewsbury Town.
Pompey failed to make possession count in the match and only managed to put 3 of their 15 efforts in the match on target, with only one of those really testing the Shrewsbury keeper.
The League One club have recently lost last season's top goalscorer Jamal Lowe, and they will be hoping that their new signing, John Marquis can make a little more impact in his first appearance at Fratton Park following an anonymous display away at Shrewsbury.
Kenny Jackett's side will also be without highly-rated midfielder Ross McCrorie after the Rangers loanee was sent off at the New Meadow on Saturday.
Birmingham City Form & Team News
Birmingham had a very different opening day to Portsmouth, as they were the benefactors of a smash and grab victory away at potential playoff contenders, Brentford.
The Championship club had one shot on target, which was a header from 20 yards, which miraculously found its way into the top corner of the net.
The Blues defended well against Brentford and held their own to snatch a 1-0 victory, but the rest of the statistics will be worrying for Blues fans.
Pep Clotet's men saw only 24% of possession and were incredibly lucky that Brentford weren't able to make their possession count.
Portsmouth vs Birmingham Analysis- Few Goals Expected
One of the most telling statistics coming out of this weekend's games is that both Birmingham and Portsmouth really struggled to get shots on target.
Between the two teams, they managed just four shots on target in their games this weekend, and outside of Birmingham's wonder goal, none of them really tested the goalkeepers.
Both teams will be looking to improve on that when they meet on Tuesday night, but there is every chance that they will end up cancelling each out.
Best bets for Portsmouth Vs Birmingham- Portsmouth to sneak a narrow win
Early season fixtures don't tend to offer the most exciting bets for punters, but the goals markets are where the value lies in this encounter.
An under 2.5 goals at 1.75 with Bet365 offers good value, with neither team looking likely to hit the net too many times on Tuesday night.
Of the two sides, Portsmouth will likely be able to make home advantage count and claim the narrow victory. Portsmouth to win 1-0 is excellent value with Bet365 at 8.00, while 2-0 is even better at 12.00.
