England came into the World Cup on the back of a 3-1 ODI series win over New Zealand and a 1-0 rain-ravaged ODI series win over Ireland.

England’s World Cup opener was against New Zealand, who they beat in the unforgettable 2019 World Cup final. England scored 282/9 off their 50 overs, with Joe Root scoring a relatively cautious 77.

New Zealand stormed to the win off just 36.2 overs, Sam Curran (147) picking up the only wicket to fall.

Ben Stokes remains unavailable for selection due to injury niggles but it is thought that he will be ready for England’s third match of the World Cup, against Afghanistan.
