How to bet on the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is one of the biggest and most popular sporting events in the world, and as a result, it draws in punters from all corners of the globe.

The tournament itself lasts a total of just three days but it attracts a global audience of millions and is often seen as a huge money-making opportunity for bookmakers and gamblers alike.

Golf can be difficult to grasp for newcomers under normal circumstances, but The Ryder Cup’s unique format can be a different beast altogether.

Thankfully for you, we here at Bonus Bets have pieced together a basic introduction on how to bet on the Ryder Cup with some handy tips on how to make some useful cash as well.

The Ryder Cup schedule

The Ryder Cup takes place every two years and lasts for the course of a weekend. It is typically held in September and there is a total of 28 match points on offer. The first team to reach 14.5 points will win the tournament, though the reigning champions will retain if they score 14.

The tournament alternates its venue every two years, with the USA hosting one tournament and Europe hosting the following one.

Types of bets

Overall winner

This one is a very simple bet and is probably the one most commonly placed during the tournament. The bet is simply on whether you think Team Europe or Team USA will win the cup, and often has very narrow odds, due to the close nature of the cup.

You can also bet on the tournament being a tie, though, this has happened very, very few times in the tournament’s history and is not really worth considering.

Top points scorer

This bet does exactly what it says on the tin. You simply choose the player who you believe will be the top points scorer during the Ryder Cup. You can, alternatively, bet on which player you believe will be the highest scorer for each of the teams as well.

Final Ryder Cup Score

This market is one for those who fancy themselves as being particularly good at predicting how the tournament is likely to play out.

The bookies will have a market offering the exact scores, which are marked out of 28. So you may be able to bet, for example, on the final score being 17-11 to the USA.

This can often prove to be a very good market to have a dabble in providing you have a good knowledge of the sport.

Fourball/Foursome/Singles bets

Another very common type of bet placed during The Ryder Cup is on who will win the daily singles, foursome or fourball matches.

The unique format of the Ryder Cup tends to mean that there can be a lot of money made off the four fourball matches which take place over the first two days of the tournament.

If you’re feeling brave here, you can also stack up these matches into an accumulator and try and win some serious cash.

Special bets

The Ryder Cup is one of the most hotly anticipated sporting showdowns in the world and it provides both punters and bookies alike a good chance to boost their finances.

Most of the major bookmakers will have huge markets available for the tournament, with many offering specials on some of the bigger name players as well.

Proposition bets such as ‘what will happen on the first tee’ or ‘how many points will player A score his team’ are always available alongside a whole array of other specials.

Most bookmakers will also offer enhanced odds and price boosts throughout the tournament and will run daily offers and specials to keep the punters involved.

Due to the high number of bets bookmakers recieve, they will likely have bonus offers including free bets and price boosts as part of sign up deals for new customers so this can prove to be the perfect opportunity to try out a different bookmaker as well.

Where to bet

Due to the popularity of the Ryder Cup, most bookmakers will be in competition with one another to attract the most customers during the tournament.

Most bookmakers will also offer odds during the gaps between the tournaments on things like ‘who will captain Team Europe at the next Ryder Cup’ or early bets on who will make the team, with Skybet once again offering the strongest market on that front.

If you are still unsure as to which bookmakers you would like to use for the event, or any event in general, feel free to check out our detailed bookmaker reviews using the drop-down menu at the top of the page.

Ryder Cup betting strategies

The Ryder Cup is one of the most exciting golf tournaments in the world and it is often famed for its unpredictable and exciting action.

Betting on the fourball matches can often prove to be a smart move, with the format not really benefiting the more consistent players and allowing players to pull surprise victories out of the bag.

The foursome matches, on the other hand, tend to be a tad bit easier to predict and can also be worth a punt if you are willing to part ways with a bigger stake.

It is also worth making sure you spend some time researching a player’s record in previous team competitions and not neccessarily their individual record. Due to the nature of the sport, a lot of players who excel in individual competitions may find themselves working under more pressure as part of a team.

Expanding on that, it is also important that you check out the records of certain player combinations, with some duos complimenting each other perfectly and therefore never offering great odds and never being worth betting against.
